As reported, travel abroad is permitted. They would serve the “mental and physical recovery outdoors”, it says from the Ministry of Health. Since the goal of shutting down the country is basically to limit contact in order to push down infection rates, this can be argued.
Day trips abroad are allowed
But this interpretation, as far as vacation trips are concerned, in turn opens the door to gastronomic and shopping trips beyond the Austrian border, as constitutional lawyer Peter Bußjäger also confirms: “In my opinion, this is possible.”
For if vacation trips are permitted under the aspect of “mental and physical recreation in the open air” leaving the living area, this also applies to day trips abroad.
Leaving the home “for the purpose of a non-permitted purpose”, is not allowed, says Bußjäger. “But if a Vorarlberg woman leaves her apartment to go for a walk in Switzerland and then gets the idea of visiting a hairdresser, that’s probably possible.”
That this was the reason for the trip across the border in the first place “is ultimately not provable and also not controllable,” the constitutional lawyer says.
2.5-G rule when returning to Austria
As with a vacation trip, a day trip to a neighboring country is governed by the respective entry regulations of the other country or the Corona rules that apply there. When returning to Austria, of course, the 2.5-G rule that came into force on Monday applies again.
Anyone entering Austria must therefore be vaccinated, recovered or PCR-tested.
